Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2011
The award of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Jules A. Hoffman and Ralph M.Steinman, along with Bruce A. Beutler, has been welcomed by European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn. Both Professors Hoffman and Steinman were aided in their work by funding from the European Union. Unfortunately, the news was accompanied by the sad announcement that Professor Steinman passed away on 30 September.

Call for Participants launched for a 'Sandpit' on Obesity and Diabetes
FRENZ (the New Zealand bilateral FP7 project, and NCP for FP7), in conjunction with the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC), has launched a call for expressions of interest for researchers to participate in a collaborative Europe-New Zealand trans-disciplinary workshop (‘Sandpit’) to be held in Rotorua, New Zealand, from 05-08 July 2011.

Statement on the International Rare Disease Research Consortium
On 06-08 April, a group of research funders, patient advocacy groups, researchers, industry and regulatory agencies meeting in Bethesda, USA, continued their work at the second meeting of the International Rare Disease Research Consortium, IRDiRC. The success of this meeting was the endorsement by many stakeholders of the objectives to deliver, by 2020, diagnostic tests for all rare diseases and 200 new therapies for patients affected by rare diseases.

EU-funded research project presents survey and recommendations on palliative care
An EU-funded research project is presenting today at a symposium in Brussels its findings on tailoring palliative healthcare to the needs and preferences of patients and their families. These findings will be available to policymakers and clinicians who choose to make use of them.

Debiopharm Life Sciences Award 2011
In 2011, the Debiopharm Life Sciences Awards will honour a European investigator below the age of 45 who has made outstanding contributions in the area of basic or translational oncology.
It will be granted on September 9 in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the occasion of the Annual EPFL Life Sciences Symposium "Hallmarks & Horizons of Cancer" to be held 07-10 September 2011.
Candidates are invited to submit their applications no later than May 1st, 2011.

The Commission has on 9 February adopted a Green Paper 'From Challenges to Opportunities: Towards a Common Strategic Framework for EU research and innovation funding' (COM(2011)48). This Green Paper launches a public consultation on the key issues to be taken into account for future EU research and innovation funding programmes. The outcome of the consultation will subsequently feed into the preparation of the Commission's formal proposals for these programmes, which are due to be adopted before the end of 2011.
