The European Commission, DG Research in partnership with the European Society of Cardiology, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the European Kidney Health Alliance has organised a two-day conference in Brussels. It gathered experienced people from the scientific community and industry working in different cardiovascular disease (CVD) and adjacent research areas (e.g. diabetes/obesity, nephrology) to reflect on the current situation in the field, to identify promising on-going European, international and national initiatives, to discuss their findings and future ways forward for the CVD area and at its interface with diabetes/obesity and kidney domains. The aim of the conference was to assess the conditions favouring the emergence, consolidation and expansion of advancements and innovations in the CVD field and their translational potential.

The Health Directorate of the European Commission's Research Directorate General organised the workshop at the 13th European Health Forum in Gastein on the 7 October 2010. This workshop explored the opportunities and challenges personalised medicine brings, with a particular focus on the bottlenecks that needs to be overcome for the rapid uptake of personalised medicine into clinical practice. The workshop was the fourth of a series of preparatory workshops gathering stakeholders interested in personalised medicine. The work shop report summarizes the major issues highlighted during the workshop.

The Health Directorate of the European Commission's Research Directorate General organised the workshop "Stratification biomarkers in personalised medicine" on 10 and 11 June 2010. This workshop aimed to explore issues associated with stratification biomarkers in the emerging field of personalised medicine. A further objective was to contribute to the planning of a conference on personalised medicine that the Commission proposes to organise in 2011. The main results of the workshop were to identify obstacles associated to biomarker discovery and to their use in clinical trials and medical practice, to contribute to build a vision for 2020 and to clarify the role of EU-funded research for progressing this rapidly emerging area of research.

The Directorate for Health of the Research Directorate General of the European Commission together with the FP6-funded project CASIMIR organised a one-day workshop on the usefulness of using mice in research into human health and diseases. The purpose was to identify the bottlenecks and limitations in using the mouse as preclinical model and to find alternative ways to generate more reliable, robust and cost effective mouse models for clinical research and drug development. The workshop identified a series of bottlenecks which range from research bottlenecks to intellectual property rights, communication, training and regulatory ones and its conclusions can be found in the Summary Report.

The aim of this workshop was to explore the role of the "-omics technologies" in the development of the emerging field of personalised medicine in view of defining the scope and agenda of a conference on personalised medicine the Commission is planning to organise in 2011.
